Holmer Green

Making the decision to ride the buses to some villages and write them up, I headed to Amersham on a Friday. The concept for village posts is that they must be a small place, not huge like some previous ones.

Rural buses are exactly that, they may go between large towns, but inbetween are much smaller places. There are 3 buses: 1A, 1B and 1C. I went for the 1A, once it finally arrived at the bus stop, and boarded the thing. I asked the driver if he went through a small village, he said yes and would tell me when we arrived, which he did. Boy was I in for a surprise, an under statement.

Holmer Green is a village but it turned out have a population of over 6000, not what I wanted, but I did not know that at first. Most of the little villages tend to have a center. There is a church, a green, a pub and often a general store/post office.

The green.

Once off the bus, I sat down for my usual 'sense' and felt uncomfortable. I should have just waited for the return bus and left.

Many cities, towns and villages have War Memorials. This one is from World War 1 and not bad considering. On Memorial Day (Remembrance Day in England) people gather to remember the fallen.

The church was not far off, but I noticed when coming into Holmer Green the large number of houses. Not far from the memorial is a pub made of flint, but I think it may have gone broke because it was all closed down. After the church I was given directions to a hall which had a map from the 1740's of the original village. This is where it all went wrong.

Different people also told me about the hall, each one giving me different directions. After the 4th try I gave up, screw this place I'm gone—wipeout. I found the return bus stop and hung around for about 30 minutes before it arrived to take me back to Amersham.

This map is from the late 1800's, look how small it was then. Pity about the current size.
